Border Field State Park is at the southernmost point in the state of California and is adjacent to the suburb of Playas de Tijuana in Mexico, and within the city limits of Imperial Beach, California. Playas de Tijuana is the westernmost borough of the municipality of Tijuana, Baja California.
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was concluded on February 2, 1848, officially ending the war between the United States and Mexico. It provided that the new international border between the two countries be established by a joint United States and Mexican Boundary Survey that began at Border Field. A marble monument was erected on the border near the shoreline in 1851. Today, Border Field contains International Friendship Park, which is just inland from the place where the border wall enters the ocean. Border Field State Park forms the southern part of the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve. The reserve is an important wildlife habitat with salt and freshwater marshes providing habitat for migrating waterfowl and resident wading birds, such as black-necked stilt, American avocet, green-winged teal, American wigeon and pelicans.
The Plaza Monumental de Tijuana is a bullring named after the neighborhood, and popularly known in English as the Bullring by the Sea. It is currently used for bullfighting, but has also been used for boxing matches, concerts, cultural, and sporting events. The stadium first opened in 1960, and is located just 200 feet (60 m) from the Mexico–United States barrier, also known as the border wall. The border wall is a series of vertical barriers along the international border intended to reduce illegal immigration to the United States from Mexico. The barrier is not a continuous structure, but a series of obstructions classified as ‘fences’ or ‘walls’. Between the physical barriers, security is provided by a virtual fence of sensors, cameras, and other surveillance equipment used to dispatch United States Border Patrol agents to suspected migrant crossings.
